Course Templates

Manage Course Templates

Course Templates are created at the time a new program is copied from the Catalog. When you first access a program, you may see that no Course Templates are available, as they are copied in to your program. Within several minutes, one or more Course Templates will appear in the Course Templates window.

In myitlab, each Course Template includes all of the available content for the GO!, Exploring, In Business, Technology in Action, and Skills for Success book series. This content is organized into folders in the Content Library, by series, book, and chapter. You can modify each of the Course Templates to match your course, if desired. You then use the Course Template as the basis for one or more Sections, to which instructors are assigned.

The Course Templates tab includes a Course Templates Area and a Course Templates taskbar, both of which provide many tools for managing Course Templates. Functions available in each are outlined below.

Course Templates List

All available Course Templates are listed in the Course Templates area. By default, for each course template, the following information displays:

By default, each myitlab course has at least one course template, named myitlab for Office 2010 followed by the date the Course Template was released, in brackets. For example, a Course Template released on July 15, 2010 would be named myitlab for Office 2010 [v07.15.10] Template.

Course Templates Options

As noted above, an options menu displays next to each Course Template name, providing a list of tasks you can perform with each Course Template. These options are as follows:

Customize a Course Template [Enter Template as Instructor]

  1. Click the options menu for the desired Course Template.

  2. Click Enter Template As Instructor (or simply click on the Course Template name).

  3. The instructor view of a course is displayed. In this view, you can customize the course template to mirror your course content, moving items from Content Library to My Course, setting Preferences, and more. Any changes you make to the Course Template will later be reflected in the Sections copied from this Course Template.

  4. To return back to the Program Admin View, click the Return to Program link in the top right corner of the window.

Edit a Course Template

  1. Click the options menu for the desired Course Template.

  2. Click Edit.

  3. The Edit Template window opens.

  4. Make necessary changes in the information (for example, you may want to change the name of a Course Template to be more descriptive). Click Update to save the changes.

Set a Course Template to Inactive or Active

You can set this flag to help you manage the templates in your list (for example, setting a template to inactive, to indicate this is an older template, that should no longer be used). When a Course Template is inactive, you cannot enter the Course Template as an instructor, either via the options menu or clicking the Course Template name.

  1. Click the options menu for the desired Course Template.

  2. Click Set to Active or Set to Inactive. [Note: If the Course Template is currently active, the menu reads Set to Inactive. If the Course Template is currently inactive, the menu reads Set to Active.]

  3. The Course Template status is changed. If a Course Template is inactive, the Status column shows the word Inactive, in red. If a Course Template is active, the Status column shows the word Active, in black.

Delete a Course Template

Be careful when working with the Delete item on the options menu. If you delete a course template, it cannot be undeleted. You will need to obtain a new copy of the template by adding a new template to your course (see below).

  1. Click the options menu for the desired Course Template.

  2. Click Delete.

  3. When the message box displays, click OK to confirm the deletion (or Cancel to cancel the deletion).

Copy a Course Template

Before you start customizing a Course Template, you may want to make a copy of the original Course Template, so that you always have a 'clean' Course Template copy. To copy a Course Template, complete the following steps:

  1. Click the options menu for the desired Course Template.

  2. Click Copy as Template.

  3. Type the name of the template and then specify the start date and end date using the calendar icon. Type in the description for the template.

  4. Click Copy to make a new copy the Course Template (or click Cancel to cancel the copy).

  5. Note: You can sort all the columns except Options. Sorting is available only when you click the column header of Templates.

Copy as a Program Shared Library

A Program Shared Library lets you distribute and share content to each of your course templates and sections. Any content item created or added to the Program Shared Library is available to instructors to add to their course sections. For example, you might want to create a Program Shared Library to distribute a departmental midterm or final, so that all instructors have access to the same assignments.

Note that a Program Shared Library is linked to a specific program, so only instructors enrolled in courses that are created as children of a program will have access to that specific Program Shared Library. As the Program Administrator, you create and maintain the Program Shared Library for one or more programs; Instructors then can copy items from the Program Shared Library to their course sections.

When instructors or other users copy an activity from a Program Shared Library, the activity scheduling options are copied with the following exceptions:

  1. If the original activity due date has passed, the due date is not copied. If the original activity due date is later than the date on which you copy the item, the due date is maintained.

  2. If you scheduled the activity for a particular student or group of students, these scheduling options are not maintained and the activity is available to all students. Instructors can update these scheduling options after copying the activity to their course(s).

  3. If you restricted access to the activity to certain locations, these scheduling options are not maintained and the activity is available to all locations. Instructors can update these scheduling options after copying the activity to their course(s).

  4. The activity preferences are set to mirror the default activity scheduling options. Instructors can update these scheduling options after copying the activity to their course(s).

To copy a Course Template as a Program Shared Library:

  1. Click the options menu for the desired Course Template.

  2. Click Copy as Shared Library.

  3. Type the name of the Program Shared Library course and then specify the start date and end date using the calendar icon. Type in the description for the template.

  4. Click Save to create the program shared library (or click Cancel to cancel the copy).

  5. The Shared Library course will be listed on the Program Administration > Sections tab, with the prefix Shared Library [for example, Shared Library : CIS Section 101].
